Changing Pickups on a SolidBody
// March 27th, 2009 // Guitar
I’ve been toying with the idea of replacing the pickups on my strat for a long, long time now, but haven’t taken the plunge due to the cost and relative complexity of the task. Yesterday I received the latest copy of “Wood & Steel” from Taylor and in it I discovered that the pickups in the Taylor SolidBody are connected using molex plugs. It is actually surprising that it has taken someone in the guitar industry this long to figure out that soldering bare metal leads to pots is outdated, overly complicated, and likely to introduce more tone issues than a standard molex.
Before I put this post online, I wanted to confirm what the process was for replacing a pickup on a SolidBody and lo and behold, Taylor has a video on YouTube.
Now for comparison’s sake here is a video from Seymour Duncan on changing the pickups in a strat. It is a great video and one I’ll probably use when I do replace the pickups on my strat, but man what a difference.

It’s funny, I’ve always thought that soldering seemed a bit crude/outdated..but I never really thought about the subject beyond that. I do think however, that in years to come, this will be the standard and not the exception. It just makes too much sense. I Wonder where things will be in 5 years with pickup installation. We shall see.
