Simple Monitoring with Nagios 3

OK, just to recap I’ve got Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64 running in VMware Fusion 2 on my Intel iMac. Running in that VM is a fresh, largely default copy of Nagios 3 installed from binaries. Right out of the proverbial box, Nagios 3 will be setup to monitor some basic elements of the localhost, a ping check for the gateway, and simple HTTP monitoring for the Apache server on the localhost. I also set up some basic contactgroups, contacts, and timeperiods. Now I’m going to expand my basic monitoring of local resources to make them a little more useful.

Basic Nagios 3 Configuration

Now that we’ve provisioned a Ubuntu server and installed Nagios 3 on it we’re going to jump in to setting up the basic configuration of Nagios 3.

Fusion + Ubuntu + Nagios = FUN

I’m sure many of you have a very different definition of FUN than I do, but when I put these three products together the acronym just came together. The real question is, “Why on earth did these components come together in the first place?”
