Here is a news flash for the guitar snobs out there; not everyone can afford to spend $500+ on an electric guitar. Sure we’d all love to have guitars with the words Fender, Gibson, Taylor, or Martin on the headstock, but very few people can actually afford them. There are a lot of people out there that are looking to buy a guitar for themselves or loved one and don’t really want to drop a whole lot of change on something that may end up collecting dust. Now If you fit into the former category then you can probably check out of this post now. However, if you belong in the latter group, please read on.

GarageBand Guitar Sampler

// March 23rd, 2009 // 5 Comments » // Guitar

Welcome to my GarageBand electric guitar amp/effect sampler. With the release of the Apple iLife ‘09 suite, came a big update to the GarageBand program. There were a lot of enhancements to the product, such as lessons, interface tweaks, and some new songwriting features, but none of those come anywhere near as important (to me) than the new guitar amp and effect models now built-in to GarageBand. The following is a sampling of the default amp/effect models included with the software. They are infinitely customizable and they very well may contribute to the retirement of my Line 6 POD 2.

Garageband a POD Killer?

The latest version of Garageband in iLife ‘09 includes a number of new features and of all those new features none were as interesting to me as the new built-in electric guitar effects. A little over a year ago, I got my hands on an old, beat up, non-functioning Line 6 POD 2.0. At the time it was a critical (missing) piece from my home studio and I desperately wanted an amp/effect processor to liven up my recordings. I spent about $80 getting it back up and running again and while it still has some issues, it generally works OK. With the new guitar amp/effects built-in to Garageband, the question was, can it compete with the POD? If so, could I simplify (or even improve) my recording environment by simply removing the POD from the mix?

Madali S-812 Deluxe

// November 24th, 2008 // No Comments » // Guitar

Once upon a time, this web site had a regular feature for PC builders. In that feature, I would create a “JustDandyPC” guide for a given month and year with all the latest and greatest PC hardware that someone could use to create their own kick-ass gaming PC. Well, now I’m resurrecting the feature, but for guitars. For the inaugural issue, I give you the “Madali S-812 Deluxe”; a strat type guitar to rival anything coming off the production line at Fender. (Assuming you put it together right.)

Found My New Pickups

// November 5th, 2008 // 1 Comment » // Guitar

One of the things on my list of things to do to my strat is replace the bridge pickup with a humbucker in a single-coil format. I immediately headed over to the Seymour Duncan web site and started reading and listening to everything I could on the various pickups. While pouring through the forums, I came across something called the “Everything Axe Single Coil Set”. This set features three different humbucker style pickups in a smaller single-coil form factor.
