Madali Guitars

// March 1st, 2010 // No Comments » // Guitar

For years now, I’ve been dreaming of the opportunity (read: money) to build my own custom electric guitar. You may even recall a couple of posts a few months back, including my very own dream Strat configuration. Well, I’ve decided to make that kind of post a regular feature on the site. The fictional guitar builder is “Madali” and there will be four series of guitars with standard, deluxe and the occasional custom editions for each model. All of the guitars will use Warmoth bodies and necks, but the rest of the parts can and will vary.

  • Tradition – Based on the legendary Fender Stratocaster
  • Signature – Based on the Fender Stratocaster
  • Heritage – A clear-toned hollowbody.
  • Legacy – Based on the rock standard Les Paul body.

This should be fun and who knows, maybe I’ll get the opportunity to actually build one some day.

Madali S-812 Deluxe

Once upon a time, this web site had a regular feature for PC builders. In that feature, I would create a “JustDandyPC” guide for a given month and year with all the latest and greatest PC hardware that someone could use to create their own kick-ass gaming PC. Well, now I’m resurrecting the feature, but for guitars. For the inaugural issue, I give you the “Madali S-812 Deluxe”; a strat type guitar to rival anything coming off the production line at Fender. (Assuming you put it together right.)

Found My New Pickups

// November 5th, 2008 // 1 Comment » // Guitar

One of the things on my list of things to do to my strat is replace the bridge pickup with a humbucker in a single-coil format. I immediately headed over to the Seymour Duncan web site and started reading and listening to everything I could on the various pickups. While pouring through the forums, I came across something called the “Everything Axe Single Coil Set”. This set features three different humbucker style pickups in a smaller single-coil form factor.

New Additions to the Design

// October 27th, 2008 // No Comments » // Music, Web

I’ve made some additional modifications to the site and I’m officially calling the latest version “Notepad Mayhem v2″. Again the theme is still based on Evan Eckard’sNotepad Chaos“, but its starting to drift pretty significantly from the original theme. I’ve got some great ideas for v3, but I need to put those on the back burner for a little while. Now on to the changes in v2.

First and foremost, I’ve added some flotsam and jetsam to the desktop to improve the overall metaphor as well as get around the three page link navigation limit. These items are:

  • Apple iPod Shuffle – Drawn using a great tutorial at Tutorial Dog. The shuffle makes for a good link to my “Music” page. In the future this page will be where I post my original creations.
  • Joe Satriani Pick – Pulled from an online music store to act as the link for my “Gear” page. This is where you can find out about my current musical gear and the kinds of things I’m doing with them.
  • WordPress Watermark – Just a little something to show my support for WordPress.
  • Red Haven Business Card – A shameless plug for my more capitalistic interests. Red Haven Internet Solutions is the umbrella for my freelance work.

A couple of the things I did behind the scenes that you may or may not have noticed was the following:

  • Replaced all of the graphical representations of the handwritten font with something cleaner and less cluttered than the original.
  • Obviously, added the code necessary to display the various items on the desk.
  • Decreased the size of the paper clip on the Recent Posts block to shift things up a bit.
  • Cleaned up all of the drop shadows on all graphical elements to make them more realistic and consistent. Made the light source consistent too.

Some of the things I’m thinking about for v3 include the following:

  • Separate the “Recent Posts” graphics from the notebook and make independent of the page background.
  • Create a “Clipped Coupon” wrapper for Google AdSense code in the sidebar.
  • Create an “Address Book” themed wrapper for Links in the sidebar.
  • Widgetize the sidebar and create custom widgets for Recent Posts, Categories, Tags, Calendar, Links, etc.
  • Create an “About” page template with a polaroid template for the author, space for themed social network chiclets
  • Create a generic page templates with the same home sidebar, different sidebar, and no sidebar.
  • Create an “Archives” page template with posts by tags, categories, date, comments, popularity
  • Multiple background options
  • Exhaustive code cleanup and optimizations
  • Create standard sized “Zones” for the items on the desk to make customization easier

I think if I can manage to accomplish all of those things for v3, I’ll consider asking Smashing Magazine and Evan Eckard if I can provide the theme for free. That being said, I probably wont get to work on those changes much until the new year.

Bye Bye Blues Cube Blues

// September 4th, 2008 // 1 Comment » // Guitar

There comes a time in every person’s life where they must say farewell to some prized posession and today I said goodbye to my classic Roland Blues Cube 30. The BC-30 is an older, discontinued Roland amplifier that has exceptional, tube-like tone in a solid state amplifier. I bought the amp back in the late ’90s to replace my old Fender 15w Champ. Shortly after purchasing this new amp, I moved in to an apartment and its lack of a 1/4″ out meant I couldn’t play it very often at all. Unfortunately, it sat idle in the corner for years only getting juiced up a couple of times a year. I found myself playing on that old Champ more and more as it was the only thing I had at the time that was neighbor friendly.
