Changing Pickups on a SolidBody

I’ve been toying with the idea of replacing the pickups on my strat for a long, long time now, but haven’t taken the plunge due to the cost and relative complexity of the task. Yesterday I received the latest copy of “Wood & Steel” from Taylor and in it I discovered that the pickups in the Taylor SolidBody are connected using molex plugs. It is actually surprising that it has taken someone in the guitar industry this long to figure out that soldering bare metal leads to pots is outdated, overly complicated, and likely to introduce more tone issues than a standard molex.

Found My New Pickups

One of the things on my list of things to do to my strat is replace the bridge pickup with a humbucker in a single-coil format. I immediately headed over to the Seymour Duncan web site and started reading and listening to everything I could on the various pickups. While pouring through the forums, I came across something called the “Everything Axe Single Coil Set”. This set features three different humbucker style pickups in a smaller single-coil form factor.
