Wii Wasteland

// March 7th, 2009 // Gaming

The Wii landscape is as barren as the world outside of a Fallout 3 vault. The selection of games that have been released over the past couple of weeks have demonstrated an utter lack of creativity that frankly has to be seen to be believed.

  • New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis
  • New Play Control! Pikmin
  • House of the Dead: Overkill
  • Sonic and the Black Knight
  • Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop
  • Major League Baseball 2K9
  • Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers
  • Deadly Creatures
  • We Ski & Snowboard
  • Solitaire & Mahjong

So, let’s recap. That’s one sports sequel, one traditional game translation, three rehashes of existing games boasting new control schemes, one new title from an existing franchise, and one actually new, if not peculiar concept involving playing a scorpion.

Now I wouldn’t say that the other platforms are faring much better. A glance at the new PS3 and X360 arrivals on Amazon shows that most of the games feature a number in the title, with only Halo Wars being the most original of them all. Still I can’t help but cringe when I look at the games slated for release in the immediate future for the Wii. While I don’t see any zombie games on the horizon it would appear that we can never have enough bad anime based RPGs. Where O’ where are you BioWare.

    I think the question has to be asked… Have game companies hit a wall? If you calculate the amount of games released on ps2,xbox, and gamecube in total, it’s no surprise to me that a lot of great ideas have already be packaged, played, and previously released. Yes, there will be the occasional ground breaking game, but similar to music..it’s all been done before. I am not surprised that new, exciting releases are in short supply. Maybe it’s time to play a classic or two? Starflight? Sword of Vermillion? Doom? Ahh…the list goes on

    OK, other than some nice looking “true” sports games on the horizon things are not really looking up for grown-up gamers with a Wii in the home. I’m sure the kids would love the DDR Disney game coming out, Indiana Jones might be fun for a little while, and Punch Out should bring back some memories, but the rest of the upcoming releases is incredibly lame. How many more party games, horror games, and adventure games based on kid’s movies do we really need anyway. Argh!
